Everyone seems to be talking about ChatGPT and blogging right now — and with good reason. AI tools have made it easier than ever to generate content quickly, which sounds like a dream come true for busy small business owners.
Having written web copy for the past 25 years, I’ve seen Google search evolve beyond recognition — constantly improving the quality and speed of its results to make sure every searcher is presented with great-quality, relevant information at their fingertips.
But there’s one guiding principle that has never changed: Google rewards content that is helpful, reliable, and focused on people first.
A client asked me recently, “I read somewhere that if your website has too much AI content on it, Google won’t rank it as highly. Is that true?”
It’s a fair question — and one that’s being asked a lot at the moment.
The truth is, Google doesn’t automatically penalise content written with the help of AI. What matters most is how it’s used. If the content is unique, relevant, and genuinely helpful to your audience, it can absolutely rank well.
Both Wix and WordPress have built-in SEO tools that can help you optimise your blogs, but no tool (AI or otherwise) replaces your experience, insight or understanding of your clients’ needs. That’s where the real value lies.
If you run a small business, you already know how hard it can be to find the time to write blogs. You want to share useful advice with your clients, boost your visibility online and keep your website fresh — but writing can easily fall to the bottom of the to-do list.
That’s where tools like ChatGPT come in. It’s fast, it’s clever, and it can help you create content in minutes. But there’s one big question that stops a lot of people from using it:
“Will my blog still get ranked on Google if I use ChatGPT?”
The answer is yes — but only if you use it the right way.
The truth about ChatGPT and Blogging Google cares about people, not robots
Google’s search system is designed to reward content that’s helpful, relevant, and written for humans. It wants to give people the best possible answers to their questions.
If your blog reads like a copy of something that’s already been said a hundred times before, Google won’t give it much attention. But if you use ChatGPT to help you express your own ideas more clearly — or to save time while still adding your personal insight — that’s when it really works.
Think of ChatGPT as your assistant, not your author
AI is a fantastic tool, but it’s still just that — a tool. The magic happens when you combine what you know about your business and your clients with the speed and structure AI can offer.
Use ChatGPT to get started, then add your own expertise, examples, and tone of voice. That’s what makes a blog stand out and what Google values most — content written by real people, for real people.
5 Simple Tips to Help Your Blog Rank High on Google:
(or How can I make my blog more relevant and helpful to the person looking for the answers to this question?).

Write for your audience first Think about what your customers are actually searching for. Use ChatGPT to brainstorm topics or questions, then write your answers in plain, helpful language. If your content helps someone solve a problem or learn something new, Google will notice.
Make it unique and personal Don’t copy and paste what ChatGPT gives you. Edit it, add your insights, stories, or client examples. Google loves fresh content that offers something different — your experience is what makes it original.
Keep it current Blogs that include up-to-date facts, local references or recent examples tend to perform better. ChatGPT can help you draft a post quickly, but always double-check facts and make sure it reflects what’s relevant today.
Focus on usability Keep paragraphs short, use clear headings, and make sure your website is easy to read on mobile. Google also rewards pages that load quickly and are simple to navigate.
Be consistent — even if you post less often You don’t need to publish a blog every week. One high-quality, well-thought-out post a month (or even every two months) will do far more for your ranking than frequent, rushed posts.
The bottom line
Google doesn’t penalise blogs just because you’ve used AI to help write them. What really matters is how helpful, relevant, and human your content feels.
If your blog genuinely helps your audience — whether it’s offering advice, sharing experience or answering common questions — then it’s exactly the kind of content Google wants to reward.
